As a MHS student, you will receive a Chromebook computer that you will have access to for 24 hours a day during the school year to use for your classes. We want to share with you the expectations and policies we have for our students with regards to Chromebooks. This will be different than what you experienced in middle school or at another school.
Before you will receive your Chromebook, you and your parent/guardian are required to physically or virtually participate in a Chromebook Orientation session.

We will have 2 orientation options that will be available in the upcoming school year:
The FastTrack Virtual Orientation, and also the preferred method, allows you and your child to complete the orientation process and forms digitally and then visit the school on one of the dates below to pay the required digital user fee and pick-up your child’s Chromebook (parent or guardian not necessary for pickup). The FastTrack Orientation process typically takes no more than 20 minutes.
The Face2Face Orientation requires the parent(s)/guardian(s) to be present with the student. Parents/Guardians and the student must sit through an orientation session, fill out paperwork, pay the digital user fee, and then pickup the Chromebook. The Face2Face Orientation process generally will take at least 60+ minutes to complete.

Parent(s)/Guardian(s) will need to be prepared to pay, in full, a one time Digital User Fee of $55. This fee includes a 4 year accidental damage protection plan, in addition to access to other digital resources. We accept Cash, Check, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover (Credit/Debit cards are subject to a 3% processing fee). This fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable to other siblings or MHS students. Individuals who qualify as having severe financial hardship may request assistance through an application process. Completing an application is no guarantee that an individual will receive assistance. Needs applications may be picked up in the MHS Main Office or downloaded online after August 1, 2018.
One other aspect that will be a change for rising 9th graders is that an incident fee will be charged each time a Chromebook is damaged. A complete, updated copy of the Digital User and Device policy and other Chromebook information is available on the McDowell High Website (www.mhs.mcdowell.k12.nc.us) and more information will be shared through the @mhstitans social media accounts and through an orientation session.
